Spray Foam Magazine – Fall 2025 – Imagine a vibrant, family-oriented community in the Rural Municipality of Springfield, Manitoba, and this could be a description of Oakbank. This charming small town offers a delightful mix of peaceful, rural living combined with convenient access to the bustling city of Winnipeg, making it an ideal place for families. Recently, a proud resident of Oakbank celebrated the successful completion of a significant indoor pool project, which stands as a testament to the exceptional workmanship of Great Canadian Insulation.

Great Canadian Insulation, co-owned by Alon Lichtenstein and Khoshanou Azizi, embodies a unique combination of expertise and experience. Alon, with his marketing background, complements Khoshanou’s extensive know-how in the spray foam industry. Together, they embarked on their business venture with a well-defined vision. They recognized the growing demand for high-quality insulation and made strategic investments, including acquiring a specialized spray rig from Ontario and bringing a project manager on board.

Through innovative marketing strategies, especially aggressive social media outreach, they successfully established themselves as leaders in the competitive spray foam market. In this pool project, Great Canadian Insulation partnered with a building contractor they have worked with several times before. Their collective mission was clear—to fully insulate a residential indoor pool addition measuring a substantial 3,100 sq. ft.

Understanding the importance of effective insulation, the contractor recommended applying SPF to both the roofline and the bottom concrete sections. This choice was pivotal in significantly reducing heat loss, extending the swimming season, lowering energy costs, and enhancing the overall structural integrity of the space. Effective insulation also helps mitigate risks associated with temperature fluctuations and freezing, crucial factors in maintaining both comfort and safety.

Applying foam to both the roofline and concrete sections will reduce heat loss, extend the swimming season, lower energy costs, and enhance the structural integrity.

As with any spray foam project, hiring skilled professionals is vital, especially when dealing with the unique challenges of insulating a pool room. Great Canadian Insulation excelled in this undertaking by meticulously managing moisture levels, an essential aspect to avoid the pitfalls of condensation and dampness, which can lead to costly structural issues if left unchecked.

They also prioritized ensuring sufficient ventilation to prevent moisture build-up, understanding that spray foam insulation should not interfere with existing ventilation systems. Additional measures were also taken to guarantee proper air circulation within the space.

Upon arriving at the site, the Great Canadian Insulation crew, consisting of the knowledgeable project manager Ryan Young, lead sprayer Mason Morrison, and skilled helpers Salah Moustafa and Hossein Azizi, took thorough precautions to ensure their equipment was fully operational. They checked their Winco generator and H40 reactor and meticulously examined their personal protective equipment (PPE), including suits, fresh air supplies, gloves, and masks, to safeguard their health and safety during the spraying process.

Preparation for the project was thorough: the pool area was covered to protect it from debris, and the groundwork was assessed to ensure it was suitable for their equipment. They even brought in a representative from CT Rentals to assess the stability of the ground to confirm it was safe and compact enough to support the weight of the boom lift. To prevent overspray and further unintentional contamination, the team secured the windows with poly sheets.

With 250 ft. of hose meticulously laid out, the crew was ready to begin the application of foam to the corrugated metal decking, selecting Carlisle’s SealTite closed-cell foam for its superior insulation properties. The crew strategically positioned an articulating boom lift to access hard-to-reach areas of the installation. They expertly applied the SealTite foam in thin, even layers, starting with the nooks and crannies to effectively seal any potential air leaks.

They maintained the proper distance and employed controlled motions to ensure an even and effective application. Following this initial phase, they applied three and a half inches of foam to the walls and gables. Using the boom lift, they then applied an impressive six inches to the roof deck, totaling six layers of foam in critical areas. Once the spray foam installation was complete, the crew applied metal sheeting over the foam to provide additional protection and enhance energy efficiency. They took great care to ensure the metal surface was properly prepped and free of contaminants.

Remarkably, the entire project was completed in just seven days. The crew devoted the first five days to expertly spraying the roof, followed by two days to finalize the installation. The client was thrilled with the outcome, reassured by the knowledge that their pool addition was insulated by certified professionals with a deep understanding of best practices and the nuances of the trade.

This successful project not only reinforces Great Canadian Insulation’s reputation for excellence, but also ensures lasting comfort and enjoyment of the homeowner’s indoor pool for years to come.
