Some Bunny Loves You
Spray Foam Magazine – Show 2026 – At Spray Foam Magazine, we make a point of checking in with our past Contractor of the Year (COTY) winners. We were especially excited to catch up with Danny Walker, the owner of Colony Insulation in Algonac, MI, who was our 2024 COTY winner! He has been super busy since his win and just wrapped up a project that truly brings a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.
Established in July 2021, Romeo Rabbit Rescue, Inc. in Macomb County, Michigan, has rescued many unwanted and abandoned rabbits. This dedicated nonprofit organization provides these adorable animals with veterinary care and love, giving them a second chance at life by pairing them with thoroughly screened adoptive families. Bunnies are high-maintenance pets that require daily care and interaction.
Due to rabbits’ sensitive nature, the team at Romeo Rabbit Rescue wanted to ensure they are as comfortable as possible while waiting for their adoptive families. This is where spray foam insulation comes into play, thanks to a little miracle that occurred via a social media post. A homeowner reached out in a Facebook group seeking a contractor willing to provide donated services to insulate two barns for a nonprofit. Colony Insulation received an overwhelming amount of mentions in the social media community regarding a call for help with this project. This resulted in Erin Silas, the founder, and Executive Director of Romeo Rabbit Rescue, contacting Colony Insulation directly about the project.
Rabbits need a warm environment to avoid serious health issues such as respiratory infections, hypothermia, and frostbite. Because their fur doesn’t dry quickly, they are especially susceptible to the cold, which can drop their body temperature to dangerous levels. A damp and cold space can also lead to health problems like arthritis, making it difficult for the rabbits to eat, drink, and move around.
At Romeo Rabbit Rescue, the bunnies are housed in two barns, which required sealing to ensure a safe, warm, and moisture-free environment. Danny spoke with Erin to explain the benefits of closed-cell foam, noting that it is ideal for air sealing, has a high R-value per inch, and is mold resistant. Most animal shelters tend to become moist and humid, making closed-cell foam a great choice that can be easily cleaned without saturating the product. Colony Insulation offered a 25% discount to Romeo Rabbit Rescue for their work on both barns. “I am an animal lover, and all the guys on the crew are too. We love to spend time with the animals we encounter on the properties we work on. We may be strangers to them, so we do our best to interact and show them that we are not there to harm them,” said Danny.
Upon arriving on-site, the Colony crew prepared the area. They didn’t have to worry about the rabbits, as Erin and her team had already relocated them while the spraying was in progress. The first barn had many windows and a couple of roll-up doors; therefore, since the crew was performing a full barn encapsulation, they had to cover all windows and doors accordingly.
The crew sprayed just over 2,000 square feet of Huntsman HEATLOK HFO High Lift closed-cell foam to the walls, roof, and decking. The crew for the first barn project included Danny as the lead sprayer and Colton assisting with scraping and cleaning. Using their new rig, which Danny had won for winning Spray Foam Magazine’s Contractor of the Year, they put on their full PPE and used a PMC PH-2 and a Carlisle ST1 gun to spray one and a half inches of foam over one and a half inches of foam board installed by the team at the rescue in both the walls and ceiling. The foam application went smoothly, and the project was straightforward.
A few weeks later, it was time to spray the second barn. For this project, they used their original Colony rig with the PH-2 and ST1 gun. The second barn was initially set to have 960 square feet of cellulose insulation. However, due to scheduling complications, Erin had to reassess her plan. Knowing it was critical to stick to her timeline as colder months were already settling in, she decided to have Colony foam the second barn instead to expedite the process for the bunnies. For the second barn, since the roof deck was to be sprayed, the crew had to cover the entire floor and all walls to protect against overspray.

For the first barn, the crew sprayed Huntsman HEATLOK® HFO High Lift closed- cell foam on the walls, roof, and decking, with Danny leading the install using his COTY- winning rig.

For the second barn, the crew applied Genyk ELITE HFO closed-cell foam to the roof deck and gable walls.
Danny was busy on the road, so he sent his crew, including Robby as the lead sprayer, along with Colton and Jon to help with the preparation and cleanup. They applied a Genyk ELITE HFO closed-cell foam that achieved R-21 insulation to the roof deck and gable walls, covering approximately 1,160 square feet of sprayable surface area. The Colony crew used three-quarters of a set of foam for each barn. The entire project took the Colony crew two half days, and Erin and her team at Romeo Rabbit Rescue were very pleased with the result. Erin even took to social media to thank Danny and his crew.
“Working with a rescue is very rewarding because being an animal is hard enough, and these animals have endured hardships. Knowing that we are making a difference in their quality of life makes me feel like I’m helping,” Danny remarked. Colony Insulation has once again proven that spray foam can work wonders when installed correctly. Kudos to the team and Romeo Rabbit Rescue for their important efforts, reminding us all, especially the rabbits, that “Some bunny loves you.”
