Closed-Cell Spray Polyurethane Foam Maintains Marketplace Freezer At Its Coolest

OVAL, PA - July 19, 2013 - Those in the restaurant industry know that keeping their food fresh is essential for good business. That is why almost every restaurant has a large cooler or freezer in the back that stores ingredients and produce that linger in a cool state to be readily available as fresh as possible when called upon. But what if that freezer has cracks that let hot air in and moisture out? What if the refrigeration gets compromised to such a degree that the food that is served to customers is of poor quality and leads to complaints and/or loss of business? A local Amish marketplace owner, who was already aware of the insulation effect of spray polyurethane foam, decided to expand on the size of his freezer and made it a priority to have SPF applied as soon as the remodeling had finished.

The owner realized that in order to maintain the ideal temperature range more efficiently, the freezer would have to be insulated from the outside and from the inside. The owner brought in Lycoming Spray Foam (LSF) for the project, which consisted of applying five inches of SPF to the inside and outside of the structure.

LSF's owner Derrick Cimini said that the owner's move for an SPF application was decidedly on point.

"When it comes to these freezer projects, spray foam is the only thing that you can work with that's sure to keep your freezer with the best temperature possible while saving you money on energy costs in the process," said Cimini.

The LSF crew prepped the freezer's substrate by nailing in Thermocore insulated panels on the interior walls of the freezer prior to the SPF application. Cimini explained that installing these panels on the inside of the freezer bolstered the structure and kept moisture produced by condensation from penetrating the foam, which he explained is LSF's standard for SPF cooler jobs.

The crew used aluminum tape to mask off any cracks and seams on the structure to further prevent moisture from getting through. They used plastic wrap to mask off the doors and windows that lead into the farmer market public area for overspray protection. During the application, the crew wore fresh air respirators and jumpsuits.

The crew applied two inches of foam on the inside and three inches of foam on the outside of the freezer. They used one set of Lapolla's Foam-LOK, a 2 lb. closed-cell spray polyurethane foam, on both surfaces. The two-man crew had one rig on site equipped with a Spray Foam Equipment Boss 5 proportioner, which was distributed by S.P.E.C. They handled a Graco Clearshot Fusion spray gun during the application, which took two days to complete.

Cimini mentioned that the greatest challenge his crew had was keeping the spray line even on the outside, which had no panels, so that the foam had an aesthetic presentation. He added that the owner was very happy with the results since the energy-efficient insulation cut his electric bills down by a large margin. For this Amish market owner, keeping his produce fresh won't be an issue going forward.
