Classes Offered by the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance to become a SPFA Accredited Roof Inspector

These classes are the 2 required Accreditation Classes offered by the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) to become a SPFA Accredited Roof Inspector.  Once the classes have been successfully completed and work history evaluated by the Accreditation Committee, the attendee can become Fully Accredited by the SPFA to become a SPFA Accredited Roof Inspector*

Mason Knowles is one of the leading Spray Foam Consultants in the industry and was the former Executive Director and Technical Director for the SPFA.  He has more than 40 years of hands on experience in the sprayfoam industry as a contractor, material supplier/manufacturer, equipment manufacturer, inspector and trade association professional.

Robb Smith is a Senior Consultant with Amtech Roofing Consultants, Inc,  and recently relocated to Phoenix, AZ, where he provides investigations, specifications and project management services.   He is a RCI Registered Roof Consultant (RRC) Smith has over 25 years of experience in the roofing industry, including experience as a Manufacturer’s Representative and Project Manager. Throughout his tenure as a Registered Roof Consultant and other roofing related positions, he has surveyed millions of square feet of roofs, developed reroofing and rehabilitation specifications for hundreds of “roofing only” projects and provided construction quality observations for many of these projects

Mason and Robb are certified by the SPFA to teach these 2 Accreditation Courses, and SPFA will award Certificates of Completion* if the final exams tests are passed. Test will be collected and sent to the SPFA for issuance of the Certificates of Completion.

101-I Fundamentals of Spray Polyurethane Foam and Covering Systems for the Independent Inspector


This one day course addresses the inspection procedures and requirements for SPF roofing systems.  It is one of the 2 required courses for accreditation as an “Inspector” in the SPFA Accreditation Program.

The course will address:

  • Spray Polyurethane Foam Chemistry and Physical Properties
  • Spray Polyurethane Foam Applications and Workmanship
  • Coating Chemistry and Applications
  • Jobsite Quality Control
  • Inspection of Spray Polyurethane Foam Roofing Systems
  • Maintenance, Repair and Renewal of Spray Polyurethane Foam Roofing Systems

R-I  Roofing Fundamentals:

This one-day course addresses all other roofing systems except spray polyurethane foam and is one of the required courses for accreditation as an “Inspector”, “Applicator” or “Foreman” in the SPFA Contractor Program. 

The course will address:

  • Deck systems
  • Insulation systems
  • Membrane systems
  • Steep Slope Applications
  • Flashing
  • Roof Contract Admin. / Compliance

(Note: Persons who are RCI Registered Roof Consultants or Registered Roof Observers are not  required to take  this course to become SPFA accredited inspectors)
