Spray Foam Contractor Beats Heat in Utah Desert Insulation Project

ST. GEORGE, UT – February 8, 2012 – BZI Construction recently completed a spray foam insulation job in the southern Utah desert, near the town of St. George. The company was contracted to re-insulate the interior surfaces of a 38,000 sq. ft. warehouse.

The facility, which functions primarily in a food storage capacity, had previously been insulated with fiberglass material. Fiberglass wasn’t cutting it in terms of necessary thermal resistance and overall energy efficiency. BZI had to cut out the existing material in order to re-insulate the structure with spray foam, which provides superior performance in aspects wherein the fiberglass was lacking.

The warehouse, being an integral part of a larger grocery supply chain, handles both time- and temperature-sensitive goods. The potential for spoiling, combined with the characteristic heat of region’s arid climate, necessitates proper insulation of the facility being particularly critical.

“We went to five inches on the ceilings and three inches on the walls,” said Charles Harker, owner of BZI Construction, of the foam insulation’s thickness.

The extra depth of the ceiling foam functions to counteract the heat radiated by the unforgiving Utah sun.

BZI opted for 183M closed cell foam, which is made by Gaco Western, to insulate the facility. The foam was applied with a Graco E-30 electric proportioner. The insulation was finished with a layer of DC315 fire retardant coating.

BZI employed a crew of three to carry out the project, which was completed in less than three weeks.
