Passing the [Gun]
Spray Foam Magazine – Summer 2026 – Rusty Schrader entered the spray polyurethane foam (SPF) industry in 1997, building decades of hands-on experience. By 2017, he was ready to launch Allstate Spray Foam Insulation in Visalia, California. That same year, his son Derek joined the business, followed by his son Dennis Chester in 2020. Rusty’s unwavering commitment to workmanship, quality, and customer satisfaction has driven the company’s success and earned him a respected reputation throughout the industry.
Today, that same passion drives Rusty and his sons to build their family legacy into a titan in the SPF sector. While competitors focused on quarterly profits, Rusty trained his sons to focus on longevity and turn hard work into resilience. With Rusty’s guidance over the last decade, this SPF family was soon recognized for their skills. This is the story of how grit and bloodlines created a blueprint for sustainable success.
Each year at the SprayFoam Convention & Expo, the latest advancements in open- and closed-cell foam technologies take center stage alongside opportunities for professional education and certification. Held in the same location but separate from the main show, contractors can also participate in live application events like the Top Gun competition. It’s here that Rusty, Derek, and Dennis connect with fellow foamies, exchange knowledge, and take pride in showcasing their skills.
Anyone familiar with this family trio won’t be surprised to learn that all three have won at the spray competition in the closed-cell applicator category: Rusty in 2021 at Stockyards, Texas; Derek in 2022 at San Antonio, Texas; and most recently, Dennis in 2026 at Las Vegas, Nevada. Reflecting on these accomplishments and the family legacy they represent, Rusty shares, “This achievement means so much to us. It’s something the three of us get to share, and we’re all very proud of that. In spray foam, the details matter—our work speaks for itself. Being recognized by the industry shows that our effort, skill, and pride are seen and valued by those who know it best.”
What began as Rusty's personal achievement has become a family tradition. Each of them has earned this recognition. It shows how deeply rooted the trio’s values of hard work and craftsmanship are. Rusty laid the foundation for his sons by teaching them skills, discipline, and a sense of pride in their work. "They took that knowledge and made it their own. They worked hard, put in the time, and have now opened their own spray foam business, Cal Foam. That is the kind of legacy every parent hopes for," explains Rusty.
As a family, Rusty, Derek, and Dennis are grateful for the industry. They have received many great opportunities and met many wonderful people. As a result, they have vowed to give back to anyone who needs help. Including Rusty offering some advice to future Top Gun participants, “Focus on consistency, precision, and staying calm under pressure. Put in the work and trust your training. And, of course, good luck going up against any of us; I have another son who will be competing in the future. So, I look forward to many more memories to make in this industry.”
