Maryland Spray Foam Contractor Completes Project for Historical Home

Eldersburg, Md. - October 10, 2011 - Carroll Insulation of Eldersburg, Md. recently teamed up with JSR Associates, a Maryland-based architectural firm, and contractor Jeremy Fivel to renovate a historical home in Ellicott, Md.

What began as a project to repair the siding on a 1920s era home, morphed into a restoration that included the removal of batt and blown fiberglass and the replacement of an entire wall of clapboards.

Since the entire wall would be exposed from the outside, homeowner and architect Jane Rohde saw an opportunity to improve the structural integrity and energy efficiency of her home.

Brad Justice of Carroll Insulation secured the contract to apply spray foam insulation to the 24 feet by 42 feet wall.

In preparation for foam application, contractors tented the entire structure with tarps and plastics to prevent any spray foam to travel into the air.

"The biggest challenge we faced when working on this house was getting access to the wall," Justice said. "The street leading to the house was very narrow and entrance to the yard was very small. "

In order to gain access to the wall, Justice said the crew used lifts.

With the lifts in place, the crew went to work applying 2 inches of BASF Comfort foam to seal and insulate the home.

The Carroll SPF team completed spraying the 2000 board-foot project in a matter of hours.

The success of the job resulted in the significant increase of the wall's rigidity, a <1 perm rating for moisture penetration, improved indoor air quality and the peace of mind that comes with knowing that a permanent and energy efficient solution is hidden beneath the historically accurate and approved siding.

"The one thing that impressed the homeowner the most following the project was how quiet her entire place became after the foam was installed," Justice said.
