Louisiana Spray Foam Company Completes University Decking Project

NATCHITOCHES, LA  – October 17, 2011 – Louisiana-based Alpha One Spray Foam and Coatings, LLC, in conjunction with Roofing Solutions, recently completed a 23,000-foot polyurea/urethane deck-coating project at Northwestern University.

"The job involved the application of coating for the pedestrian deck in and around the Northwestern University Student Union," said Alpha One Owner Steven Loga.

An Alpha One crew started the program by working with a demolition team to remove the entire top layer of 1-inch Epoxy Pressed Gravel from the surface in order to get the original layer of decking.

Once this was done, crew members checked all 23,000 square feet of cement decking to find hollow spots where the top layer had separated from the lower cement decking.

“This was done by taking a hammer and hitting the surface,” said Loga. “If the epoxy decking was secure, a ‘thud’ sound would be heard. If the original epoxy gravel had separated, a hollow sound would be made similar to tile flooring in a home that is not adhered well.”

Loga’s crew then marked off all of the areas where there were hollow spots, and jack hammered them out. Once that was done, the crew laid down 5-Star ES Structural Cement, which cured in 24 hours.

“It allowed us to coat over the polyurea whereas traditional cement would take over 28 days to cure,” Loga said.

The crew then chipped out all the cracks that were short of ¼ inches, and then installed new backer rods in all of the expansion joints followed by VersaFlex Poylurea Joint Filler. Once this was done, the crew primed the work area with VersaFlex VF20 Two Part Epoxy Primer, and allowed it to dry for 12 hours.

Once the primer dried, the crew then applied VersaFlex FSS45DC Arromatic Tan Polyurea over all the cracks, seams and low areas at a rate of 80 dry mils.

“We then applied an additional 60 mils of polyurea over the entire surface,” Loga said. “A base coast of Neogard Tan Urethane Coating at a rate of 1.25 gallons per square was applied to give us 14 dry mils of coating. We allowed it to dry, then applied an additional 1.25 gallons per square of Neogard Tan urethane Coating embedding a minimum of 15 pounds of aggregate into the wet urethane coating. The total application of all coatings exceeded 100 dry mils.”

The job took 20 days to complete while working with winds that would reach up to 15-20 miles per hour.

To counter the wind, crews worked in an enclosed spray tent made of PVC, Pneumatic Wheels and canvas drop clothes to catch any over spray, Loga said.

“The job was estimated to take 30-45 days from start to finish,” said Loga. “We are proud to have completed the job 10 days ahead of schedule.”
