InsulStar® Closed-Cell Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation Meets Latest IBC, IRC and IECC Codes

April, 2008 - Mount Airy, NC - InsulStar, a high performance closed-cell spray polyurethane foam insulation manufactured by NCFI Polyurethanes, is in compliance with the 2006 International Building Code, International Residential Code and International Energy Conservation Code, according to a report released by the California-based nonprofit group ICC Evaluation Service, Inc (ICC-ES). This compliance includes being the only closed-cell spray foam evaluated for use in unvented attics, per the 2006 International Residential Code.

Don Schumacher, Director of Sales and Marketing of NCFI, pointed out the importance of such a report. “As high energy prices become a major issue, people are looking for new ways to lower their utility bills, and InsulStar is becoming more and more popular because it cuts energy costs by as much as sixty percent. It’s important that people who choose InsulStar know that it’s code compliant,” he said. He noted that InsulStar insulation may be applied to wood, metal, concrete and masonry, and gypsum board surfaces, making it one of the most versatile insulation materials available.

In compiling the report, ICC-ES noted that InsulStar meets the following 2006 IRC requirements:

  • Allows unvented attic applications
  • No additional vapor retarder normally needed
  • 8 inches maximum thickness in wall assembly
  • 12 inches max thickness in ceiling
  • Lists R-values to the max installed thickness
  • Job site certification provided for installer
  • Allows exposed SPF on floors of vented attics
  • Permits ignition barrier coating

In addition, InsulStar meets Florida Product Approval for roof deck wind uplift resistance, helping prevent damage during hurricanes and other high wind events.

ICC-ES is a nonprofit, public-benefit corporation that does technical evaluations of building products, components, methods, and materials and issues technical reports that directly address the issue of code compliance. The complete ICC-ES report on InsulStar is available at www.NCFI.com.
