Fresh Foam, Fresh Perspective From South Florida Attic Insulation Project

JUPITER, FL – February 17, 2012 – Anytime Insulators, Inc., based out of Riviera Beach, Florida, recently completed the insulation of a home in Jupiter Inlet Colony. The daylong project involved the application of spray foam on the underside of the attic of the house, which is still under construction.
"The biggest thing is looking at the savings in energy," said Willie Jackson, owner of Anytime Insulators, Inc. "Spray foam pays you back. It's really an investment."
Jackson, who started spraying foam in 1980, has worked on everything from residential applications to marine applications. He noted that the industry didn't really take off in South Florida when he started out. From the mid-1980's onward, Jackson saw the insulation industry focus more on fiberglass and cellulose insulation. It wasn't until the 2000's that he saw resurgence in spray foam application.
From feast to famine and back again, Jackson described how intra-state competition has intensified, driving project bids down.
"Now everybody's doing it," said Jackson. "We get some guys coming over here and blowing our prices out of the water."
A quality bid can only be placed so low, however. Upon Further investigation into the stark bid differences, Jackson discovered some less-than-robust applications. Forgoing the option to cut corners in order to compete on price, Anytime Insulators has a strict focus on its application process so that it competes on quality.
Jackson was straightforward: "You get what you pay for."
Indeed, the foam being sprayed in the attic formed a gently billowing pattern, expanding out to a thickness of five inches. For this application, Jackson opted for open-cell foam distributed by Service Partners, as he finds it has the optimum combination of consistency and proper price point.
Beyond material considerations, Jackson is a self-described perfectionist when it comes to the application process. His crew utilizes markers and depth probes for achieving a consistent thickness. Furthermore, Jackson is a stickler for surface consistency. For example, in a previous application project, he had an entire room scraped and re-sprayed. When the builder asked why his crew was going over it a second time, Jackson simply told him he didn't like how it looked.
Even still, competition in the spray foam market combined with the downturn in the construction industry has forced him to differentiate his business. In addition to insulation, Anytime Insulators, Inc. does specialty installations like cabinets, shower enclosures and closet shelving, as well as interior and exterior painting.
"These days, you've got to diversify," said Jackson. "You've got to have something to fall back on."
