Circle D Sprayfoam, Inc. Insulates New Maine Residence With Spray Foam

CORINNA, ME – January 7, 2013 – Many people view Maine as a picturesque escape from their hectic day-to-day lifestyle, but some are fortunate enough to call it home. One homeowner invited his extended family to move to Maine to share his experience by building them a new home. When it came to insulating it, he knew Circle D Sprayfoam, Inc. was the contractor he would hire to get the job done.

The homeowner was already familiar with Circle D because he had contacted them a year earlier to insulate another property he had built for his family just 500 yards away from the new project site.

"He's building his own little village," said Skip Doodson, Owner and Operator of Circle D.

Seeing that the first home withstood a harsh New England winter and had significantly decreased his heating bill, there was no question he would insulate the new home with spray foam.

The new residence is a single-family home that is divided into two segments with two kitchens and four bathrooms. Unlike most duplexes, however, the units are connected.

In preparation for application, Circle D masked off exterior doors and windows, electrical units, and tub and shower units with Visqueen plastic.

Crewmembers then sprayed the building envelope with Bayer MaterialScience's BaySeal CCX 2 lb. closed-cell spray foam. They applied 3 inches of the foam to the exterior walls, 5.5 inches to the roof, and about 4 inches to the garage ceiling. The garage ceiling was sprayed in order to help prevent exhaust fumes from entering the living space located above it.

Since it was a large home, the crew used two ventilators while spraying, one blowing fresh air in and the other sucking the fumes out, establishing adequate cross-ventilation. Doodson wore an air-supplied respirator while his helper wore a full-face respirator. No other trades were present during the application.

It took Doodson and another crewmember just over seven days to complete the project. A third crewmember was brought in on the last day to help with cleanup. The homeowner was very satisfied with Circle D's work. His brother, a builder, has already hired Circle D to insulate another home in April of this year. "He knows he's going to get a good job at a good value," said Doodson.

At 33,000 bd. ft., the spacious home was a unique job for Circle D. According to Doodson, the company often sprays up to 150 basements per year and their average residential application is from 12,000 to 18,000 board feet. "This was two to three times bigger than our normal work," he said. "We do a lot of existing homes two or three rooms at a time as occupants can afford to remodel."

Doodson got into the spray foam business after he hired someone to spray his own residence. "I tell everybody I'm like the guy from the Remington Razor Company who liked the razor so much, he bought the business," he said.
