BaySystems Spray Foam Insulation Improves Energy Efficiency in City of Salida Housing Authority

Pittsburgh, February 18, 2010 — With the use of BaySystemsTM spray polyurethane foam, the City of Salida, Colo., Housing Authority has dramatically improved energy efficiency of its buildings as part of a federal stimulus grant.

Two Housing Authority buildings were retrofitted using BaysealTM CC spray polyurethane foam – a closed-cell foam that seals the building envelope to create an optimal energy-efficient environment. BaySystemsTM, the global polyurethane systems business of Bayer MaterialScience LLC and maker of BaysealTM CC, supplied the polyurethane foam. Extreme Foam, based in Buena Vista, Colo., applied the BaysealTM CC foam to the bottom of the roof decks, creating an unvented attic assembly.

“Many of our tenants have been telling us how much better their living environment is since the buildings were retrofitted with BaysealTM CC foam,” said Billie Jean Valdez, executive director, City of Salida Housing Authority.

But anecdotal evidence wasn’t enough. “We’re keeping a close eye on the energy consumption of the two insulated buildings and comparing results to two other buildings of the same size and footprint that haven’t been retrofitted with BaysealTM CC foam,” said Jerry Shannahan, CEO, Extreme Foam.

Initial results are through the roof. The Salida Housing Authority buildings retrofitted with BaysealTM CC foam are achieving energy savings of 57-64 percent over the other comparable units, Valdez said.

“The results have been amazing,” Valdez said. “These are senior citizen housing units, and the tenants are more sensitive to temperature changes, which can impact energy consumption during any season.”

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provided the funding for this project under the “Assisted Housing Stability and Energy and Green Retrofit Investments Stimulus Program” that became law in 2009.

The housing authority plans to continue monitoring the energy consumption over a 10-12 month period. The promising results of the pilot project have Valdez hopeful that additional units will be retrofitted next year increasing energy efficiency and further improving tenants’ quality of life.
