BaySystems™ Earns Energy Star Partnership for Bayseal™ Closed-Cell Spray Foam Insulation
Pittsburgh, November 13, 2008 —BaySystems™, the umbrella brand for the global polyurethane systems operations of Bayer MaterialScience, has been named an Energy Star partner for its Bayseal™ CC and PP grades of energy-efficient spray polyurethane foam insulation. Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) designed to help consumers save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices. Bayseal™ foam is sprayed onto both the inside and perimeter walls of a home in lieu of traditional fiberglass insulation to create a more efficient thermal envelope. The foam quickly expands, filling open spaces to provide a continuous, protective air barrier that virtually eliminates air leakage, the leading cause of building energy waste. Bayseal™ foam cures within seconds, forming the foundation of a structurally strong, virtually airtight, thermal, sound and condensation barrier. Energy Star partners must meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and DOE, including following the Federal Trade Commission’s rules for reporting aged resistance to heat flow, or “R-value.” R-values determine the degree to which an insulation product is resistant to heat, air leakage and moisture transmission. Bayseal™ closed-cell (CC) is dense, rigid spray foam insulation with an aged R-value of 6.9 per inch. Bayseal™ Polar Pro (PP) has the same resistance properties as Bayseal™ CC, but is a cold-cure formulation that can be sprayed on colder walls in temperatures as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit. In order to receive its Energy Star partnership, BaySystems™ supplied the EPA with product case studies and literature providing quantifiable data supporting the company’s claims of Bayseal™ spray foam insulation’s energy-saving performance. “The Energy Star logo is recognized by consumers as a symbol for energy savings, and we are proud that the BaySystems™ Energy Star partnership will help our Bayseal™ polyurethane spray foam products become recognized for their energy-efficient properties,” said Charles Valentine, Commercial Director, BaySystems™. “Bayseal™ polyurethane spray foam insulation products have some of the highest R-values available, and that translates into measureable energy cost savings for homeowners.” With the help of Energy Star, Americans saved enough energy in 2007 alone to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 27 million cars – all while saving $16 billion on their utility bills, according to Energy Star. About BaySystems™: Effective March 1, 2007, Bayer MaterialScience has combined its entire global polyurethane systems business under the umbrella brand of BaySystems™. This change affects not only existing product brands in this segment – including Bayseal™ – but also the global network of polyurethane systems houses.
