Product Diversity Key to Spray Foam Polymers’ Success

WILTON, CT–July 24, 2012–"We like to have a diverse product line so we can offer our customers the right foam for the job that they're doing," said Richard Ettinger, general manager of Spray Foam Polymers (SFP).

SFP manufactures a broad line of spray foam, pour foam, and protective coatings, all of which are marketed under the ThermoSeal brand. The company provides an extensive range of open-cell foams (0.5 lb. and .8 lb.) and closed-cell foams (1.8, 2.0 and 2.1 lb. for walls; 2.5, 2.7 and 3.0 lb. for roofing). Additionally, SFP also produces a unique hybrid open- and closed-cell foam.

"It's 1.1 to 1.2 pounds, but you'd get just less than double the coverage that you'd get from a 1.8 to 1.9 pound foam," said Ettinger. "It's cost effective and it gives you some options as far as snaking wires and low vapor permeance."

The hybrid foam's higher R-value, relative to a strictly open-cell foam, allows for a given insulation application to meet building code requirements with a lesser volume of foam. The presence of less material can leave enough room in wall cavities such that wires can still be run though. Beyond saving cavity space, Ettinger also pointed out that the hybrid foam's vapor permeance is comparable to that of a 1.8-2.0 lb. closed-cell foam.

A hybrid foam is also offered in ThermoSeal's renewable line of soy wall foam, which also features a 0.5 and 1.5 lb. open-cell foams. SFP made efforts during the formulation of its soy foam to avoid what it sees as shortcomings in other soy foams on the market.

"If you put too much soy in, the foam becomes more brittle," explained Ettinger. "Our foams are much more flexible, or pliable, so when the building moves, the foam won't crack."

Although soy foams garner attention because of their popularity in architects' specifications, SFP stresses that renewable content is a characteristic present throughout the ThermoSeal family of spray foams. But the company not only differentiates its ThermoSeal foams in what they're made of, but also in how they're sprayed. Their 2 lb. closed-cell foam is also offered in an "Arctic" version that will spray in temperatures as low as 10ºF.

In addition to spray foam, SFP's ThermoSeal products also include pour foams and elastomeric coatings. This varied product line is a key component to the company's ongoing growth trend.

"Our sales have doubled every year," said Ettinger, "and we have for the past seven years in a row."

Further differentiating its product offerings beyond material, SFP distributes a full range of spray application equipment, from proportioners and spray guns to hoses and pumps, and even entire spray rigs. Not to neglect the service side of the business, SFP also offers onsite training. All of these factors weight into what the company envisions as its future success.

"We're preparing to be one of the predominant players in the foam industry," Ettinger summarized.
