Experts Recommend Homeowners Prepare Houses for Hurricane Season

As hurricane season begins to intensify as the summer months go on, homeowners in U.S. states that are affected by the weather events are working to prepare their homes for potential damage.

According to a report from Florida Today, disaster mitigation measures are being taken in communities throughout Florida as residents prepare for what could be an especially active hurricane season. Over the years, a number of hurricanes have swept through the Sunshine State, leaving houses with water and wind damage, but experts assert that there are some ways to help shore up a home's defenses.

For example, Brevard County chief building official Mike McCaughin told the news source that homeowners should work with professionals to improve the integrity of their houses. One way homeowners can prepare for hurricanes is by applying closed-cell spray foam to the underside of any roof decks. According to experts, this can help to strengthen the bond between the roof sheathing and framing. What's more, it provides an additional barrier against water damage.

"While there is no way to fully protect against hurricane damage, updating a house's windows and doors is a good place to start," McCaughin said.
