American WeatherStar Announces 2011 'Spotlight on Excellence' Awards
ADA, OKLAHOMA - March 2, 2011 - American WeatherStar is pleased to announce the first recipient of the 2011 “Spotlight On Excellence” as the Concrete Silo at the Holcim Plant in Ada, OK, which was recently completed by:

Job Location: Ada, Oklahoma
Customer: Holcim
Substrate Specifications: Concrete
AWS System Installed:
Polyurethane Coating System
The Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) roof on this concrete silo had been pushed well past its lifespan. The head of maintenance with Holcim at their Ada, OK cement plant contacted Dorseys Roofing out of Oklahoma City to see if they could offer a solution. The foam roof was severely blistered, delaminating in spots, and saturated. The situation had reached the point where leaks were becoming a consistent problem.
Using the American Weatherstar Polyurethane Coating Systems, Dorseys Roofing proposed a complete tear-off down to the concrete deck. Gilbert Swain of Dorseys Roofing determined through several core cuts that the structural concrete deck was in good shape, meaning a coating system could be applied directly to the deck.
Since the roof was over 100 feet in the air, the tear-off was a challenge. The spray foam came up in small pieces and had to be put into bags before it could be sent over the side of the roof to their staging area on the ground. Power-washing and bringing material to the roof brought more logistical issues at this height as well.
Each day a section was torn off, cleaned, primed and sealed to ensure no water intrusion in the silo. The system included a full prime of American WeatherStar's SBS 950, then AWS Urethane Brush Grade 522 was used to seal all cracks and transition points on the roof. Finally, three coats of AWS Urethane 520 were installed to completely waterproof the concrete deck.
The Urethane 520 coating system is our best system for an industrial facility with roof traffic and some ponding on the roof. This system offers many years of service life even in this environment.
