New ICC Report Issued for BioBased 501w® Spray Foam Insulation

New ICC Report Issued for BioBased 501w® Spray Foam Insulation

SPRINGDALE, AR -  May 18, 2011 – An updated evaluation report for BioBased 501w®, spray polyurethane foam insulation, has been issued by the ICC Evaluation Service, Inc.

The updated report includes information from a new industry test procedure, Appendix X of AC377, the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Spray-applied Foam Plastic Insulation. Appendix X focuses on the use of spray-applied foam plastic insulation in attics and crawlspaces without a prescriptive ignition barrier.

BioBased Technologies®, the makers of BioBased 501w®, tested Flame Seal® TB as the intumescent coating over its open cell spray foam insulation. According to the manufacturer, the tests documented the thinnest coating over foam to pass the modified NFPA 286 room corner test to date.

As a result, BioBased 501w® can be spray-applied to vertical surfaces in attics and crawlspaces, the underside of roofs and/or rafters in attics and the underside of wood floors and/or floor joists in crawlspaces at a thickness of up to 11.25 inches and coated with 4 wet mils (3 dry mils) of Flame Seal® TB.

Until now, the minimum coating thickness that had passed the Appendix X test was 8 wet mils. On average, 12 wet mils is the coating thickness for most spray foam products.

“We’re excited about these results because this thinner coating will make application easier, faster and more cost effective for our installers without compromising the safety of building occupants,” said Chris Porter, technical manager for BioBased Technologies®.

The ICC-ES evaluation report provides third-party verification to architects, contractors, specifiers and building officials that BioBased 501w® meets the 2006 International Building Code®, the 2006 International Residential Code®, and the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code®. The new ICC-ES Report 1383 will be available at iccsafe.org.
