Spray Foam on Commercial Duct
Hi Mason, I have a church in NJ where I want to CC Spray Foam the exterior of the ductwork on the roof . We're following IMC/2015 and Section 604.3 seems like it doesn't allow any product with smoke-developed index of >50. (I don't see any exception for exterior ductwork.)

I saw back in this 2010 post https://sprayfoammagazine.com/forum/topic/foam-on-mechanical-ducts/2532 that you said "You can use SPF on ducts on the exterior of the building, for example, roof top equipment."

Can you provide any further information or clarification.

Thanks!

For years, spray foam was allowed on roof top ductwork without having to comply with the 25/50 flame and smoke rule. However, the ICC codes are modified every 3 years and I do see that the 2015 codes specifically list construction of ductwork materials and insulation to abide by the 25/50 rule. I believe the 2018 codes specifically exempt spray foam from this rule, but I am double checking with my ICC codes experts. Will let you know.
