Painting a metal building requires knowledge of substrate preparation as well as using a good paint or coating.

Check out information at the following websites for surface preparation and coatings. www.corrosion.com/prep.asp
& sspc.org. These are links to websites of the Society of Protective Coatings and substrate preparation for metal surfaces as compiled by NACE National Association of Corrosion Engineers and the Steel Structures Painting Council.

Some of our SPF roof coating manufacturers make coating systems for metal buildings. Check out their information as well (such as United Coatings, Conklin, National Coatings, Bay Systems, Gaco Western and others.

Surface preparation is extremely important in coating metal buildings. You need to remove not only contaminants on the metal but also treat any rust that may be in the metal. Also, fasteners and welds may need repair or replacement.

Are you talking about insulating the outside of the building then coating it? If so, download SPFA's guideline AY 134, Insulating metal buildings with SPF. You need to use coatings specifically designed for use with SPF and you need to use the correct density foam. (at least 2.5 lb density closed cell).

You would need to use a thermal barrier coating over the foam when insulating the interior of the building. There are a few. For example, Preferred Solutions out of Ohio has a spray on coating that is a thermal barrier.
