insulating over recessed lights
spraying foam in attic spaces where recessed lights are installed poses some challenges.
Spraying the foam directly on the light isn't recommended therefore there is a need for a fire safe protective cover. Many installers have come up with creative solutions but there are also off the shelf products that can solve this problem.

We wrap all lights, IC rated or not, in Thermafiber aka Rock Wool aka Rotton Cotton aka "if you thought regular fiberglass was bad, get a load of this stuff".

We slide a piece of rigid foam board above the light and spray it in place. If the cans are IC rated we wrap them with fiberglass. I wouldn't put any insulation material within 3" of non-IC rated cans, even roxul.
