Aliphatic vs. Aeromatic
Hey Mason,

I was recently asked what the difference is between these two terms and i gave a pretty scattered answer. Could you please give a clear answer.

Thanks,

Don't get too techinical with folks, just tell them that aliphatic urethane coatings are typically used as top coatings due to their high resistance to UV and high impact and abrasion resistance. While most aromatic urethane coatings have high flexiblilty and tensile strength but lower UV resistance and are typically used as base coatings. There are some aromatic coatings that can be used as top coatings, but they have fillers such as aluminum that give it more UV resistance.

Check out the definitions in SPFA's tec doc. Glossary of terms. AY 119

I forgot to mention that aliphatic urethanes have an ability to retain high gloss finishes and good color rentention

Not to mention aliphatic's cost about twice as much as aromatic urethanes. Aromatics only have color stability up to about 2000 hours under UV rays(6 months), aliphatics have easily 10X that.
